A Parents’ Support Group within a Gay-Lesbian Organization is not a common everyday occurrence. However, the group has a very important function: Parents often feel - through the homosexuality of their children - alone, confused, bewildered and uncertain. The Nürnberg Parents’ Group in Fliederlich is an important meeting point for all parents who have found out that their children are gay or lesbian.
For many it is the only opportunity to talk about their children in confidence and in private. Parents learn to deal with their anxiety and to receive information about homosexuality. Parents are welcomed by parents who have dealt with – or are dealing with the same issues. They learn it is important to keep the communication channels open with their own children, politicians, the church, and other institutions, so that their children can gain self-confidence.
Since Jan. 2001 one of the mothers has been a member of the board for Fliederlich.
The Parents’ Support Group meeting for parents of gay sons or lesbian daughters takes place every 2nd Saturday of the month at 15:00 hours (3:00 PM). The meeting point is the organization’s center in the Breite Gasse 76, 1st floor / corner of Färberstraße, not far from the underground (subway) station "Weißer Turm"). To further the first contact between parents of homosexual children, just call (0911) 423457-0 on the 2nd Saturday of each month between 3 and 5 PM.
